Use the USDA Hardiness Zone Chart to determine the zone in which you live. You can then use that zone information when selecting trees, shrubs, flowers and other plants for your use. Almost all nursery plants and seeds will have information about the zones in which they will grow.

With
tender young plants, it is best to err on the side of caution
regarding the temperatures they can withstand. If you are dealing
with established 'woody' plants, there may be above-ground damage
but the roots may still be healthy.

Pay particular attention to the first and last average frost dates for your area. These will have a great effect on what you plant and when you plant. Just remember that these dates are based on averages and you can
have earlier or later frosts. In my area, we have had frosts as much as 45 days after the average date.
